Geocentric Transit Table for
Jupiter-Uranus 1899-1915

For an explanation of transit tables see

The first and second rows of this table tell us that following the end of the 5°-conjunction on 1900-05-31 the separation between the two planets remained between 5° and 10° until (due to retrograde motion) a new 5°-conjunction was formed on 1900-09-09. This became an exact conjunction on 1900-10-20 and persisted until 1900-11-21. After that date the separation increased until the 10°-conjunction ended on 1900-12-22. Similar remarks apply to the information about the following sextile given in the third and fourth rows of the table.

The fifth, sixth and seventh rows, concerning the following square, tell us that during the 5°-square which lasted from 1903-05-25 to 1903-09-23 an exact square occurred twice, the first time on 1903-07-01 and the second time on 1903-08-14. Following the end of the 10°-square on 1903-11-07 a second 10°-square began on 1903-12-16, and persisted until 1904-04-11, after which the 15°-square ended on 1904-05-01.

The eighth row of the table tells us that a 15°-trine began on 1904-05-01, the same date on which the preceding 15°-square ended. In fact the transition from the 15°-square to the 15°-trine was instantaneous. At 11:00 GMT on 1904-05-01 the celestial longitudes (according to the tropical zodiac) of Jupiter and Uranus were 14°38' (14Ar38) and 269°39' (29Sa39) respectively, with the separation between them being 360°-269°39'+14°38' = 104°59', slightly less than 90°+15°=105°, thus the 15°-square was still in effect. At 13:00 GMT the celestial longitudes of Jupiter and Uranus were 14°40' (14Ar40) and 269°39' (29Sa39) respectively, with the separation between them being 360°-269°39'+14°40' = 105°1' slightly more than 120°-15°=105°, thus the 15°-square ended and immediately the 15°-trine began. (This example shows why the orb for sextiles, squares and trines must always be no greater than 15° — for if in this case it were 16° then Jupiter and Uranus would for a short while have formed both square and trine aspects simultaneously.)

The influence of retrograde motion is particularly noticable during the period 1909-1911. Instead of the regular succession of trine, square and sextile we have: trine, square, trine, square, sextile, square, sextile.

World War I began in the summer of 1914. The event which triggered it (but which was not the cause of it) was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on 1914-06-28. The last two lines of the table tell us that a 10°-conjunction of Jupiter and Uranus had ended on 1914-05-21 but that the next 10°-conjunction did not begin until 1914-07-17. The actual fighting began on 1914-07-28 with the Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia, at which time Jupiter and Uranus were within 10°. The conjunction did not become exact, with the separation reaching a minimum of 4°43' on 1914-10-06 (with Saturn exactly conjunct Pluto, and Mercury almost exactly conjunct Mars), just over two months into the war, which lasted another four years.
